My usual way of painting can best be discribed as "Abstract Impressionism"; a genre I coined this name for some years back... What I mean by this is explainable. I start with abstract ideas and paint my impressions of these concepts. I try to be quick about it, staying in the moment and keeping my mind on the subject at hand...Some of my earlier work was done very differently over several months' time...The "Rebop" series were such works. These were also based on abstract concepts but my techniques were slow and studious. It was a natural shift to try new techniques that better served my goal of spontanious painting, more jazz-like than symphonic. Some of the new work harkens back to the "Energy as Matter" Series...But the optimism I find in Feng Shui is now refreshing the content of my paintings! In any case I hope the works are enjoyed and used as spring-boards for imaginations to take flight!
The following review is reprinted from Cover Magazine
Jan.'94:
Some artists- and there are many-
dedicate the entirety of their life's work to the service of some inner muse or
necessity, virtually untouched by the fluid barage of movements, trends and isms
which mark and influence so many others. Patrick Goldsmith is just such an
artist. Throughout these works, but especially in the later paintings,
Goldsmith impresses with an emotive lyricism and able touch with color and
texture, variously evoking master abstractionists such as Mondrian, Kandinsky,
Pollack, Rothko, and Johns. The self-stated cosmic and Taoist concerns at
the core of his art (baldly announced in such titles as: "Energy as Matter",
"Yang", "Boddhisatva Relinquishing the Void", "Big-Bang!",etc.) often find
metaphoric substance in these works, which meld the visual artist's careful eye
with a poet's lyric and questing sensitivity. There is a serious yearning
for the Infinite in the best of these works: to quote the artist:" My Quest is
to express the humble awe I feel as I contemplate the universe. As the Big-Bang
Theory has its counterpart in Hindu mythology, I feel I may also be able to
manifest my joy in the vision I hold of the first moments of our physical
reality that was created from energy, maybe pure consciousness... The idea of
this vast potential is what drives me to paint."
My own works are tendered here as examples of styles, named series or various subject matters that I have worked with over the years. There is some cross-over of content as I have done Feng Shui & Taoist works in many styles. Each piece is only shown once...Please browse these pages to see them all... & I hope you enjoy the paintings!
DUE TO FLOODING WHERE MY PAINTINGS WERE STORED, MANY HAVE SUFFERED SOME WATER DAMAGE. I NEED TO CLEAN AND REASSESS THEIR CONDITION. THEY WILL BE BACK ON LINE AS THEY ARE READY...Thank you for your kind concerns & E-mails!
Thank you for your kind interest!
