Lacquer-ware from Pagan, Burma

All the lacquer-ware that is offered here was created in the workshops of Ko Aung Nyaunt of Pagan, in what is now known as Myanmar. Pagan is the historic center of Burmese arts and culture, nestled on a plain of stupas stretched along the west bank of the Irrawaddy River. The craftsmanship of these pieces can not be surpassed. I have been seeking Burmese lacquer-ware from San Francisco to Amsterdam. None that I have seen comes close to the level of excellence that is offered here! Ko Aung Nyaunt has created real beauty with this work. The technique is arduous in the extreme. First the item to be lacquered must be built or woven. As many layers as colors are then applied. In complex pictures, layers of black, green, red, yellow and black (again) lacquer are applied. Each layer is carefully dried as it is added. Then needle-like tools are used to etch down to the desired colors and after an image is created the whole piece is polished and refined. Then the finished works are dried in underground vaults for several months to cure the lacquer.
